Henkel Technomelt PUR 3317 BR for PUR Perfect Binding

Henkel Technomelt PUR 3317 BR, formerly known as Purmelt QR 3317 BR, is a one-part polyurethane reactive hot-melt adhesive developed for commercial perfect binding and book-spine gluing. This listing includes one sealed 1 kg bag of adhesive pellets.

Technomelt PUR 3317 BR provides excellent adhesion across a wide range of papers and difficult-to-bind materials. Its moisture-curing PUR chemistry produces a strong, flexible spine that performs well on demanding books, catalogs, manuals, digitally printed work, and other applications where conventional EVA adhesive may not provide sufficient durability.

This adhesive is commonly supplied for the Standard Horizon BQ-160 PUR Perfect Binder and may also be used in other compatible open-tank PUR binding systems. Browse Mid-State Litho's complete selection of commercial bookbinding adhesives.

Compatibility note: This is a moisture-reactive PUR adhesive and must only be used in equipment designed or configured for PUR. Do not load it into an EVA-only glue pot. Confirm binder compatibility and follow the equipment manufacturer's operating and cleaning instructions before changing adhesives.

Key Features

  • Reactive PUR chemistry: Moisture-curing polyurethane adhesive creates a durable and highly flexible bond.
  • Made for perfect binding: Developed for commercial book production and spine gluing of thread-sewn books.
  • Strong material adhesion: Suitable for a variety of papers and difficult-to-bind materials.
  • Flexible cured film: Helps finished books open more naturally while maintaining page-pull strength.
  • Medium open time: Provides controlled application in compatible production binding equipment.
  • Compact package: Supplied as one sealed 1 kg bag of pellets for easy handling and inventory control.
  • Temperature flexibility: The cured adhesive remains flexible across high- and low-temperature conditions.

Applications

  • Perfect-bound books, manuals, catalogs, directories, and reports
  • Short-run digital and commercial book production
  • Book-spine gluing of thread-sewn signatures
  • Difficult-to-bind paper stocks and demanding applications
  • PVC and acetate films where permitted by the application
  • Horizon BQ-160 PUR and other verified PUR-capable perfect binders

PP and PE films require recent corona treatment with a surface tension above 40 mN/m. Because paper, coating, toner, film, and production conditions vary, Henkel recommends testing the complete application before beginning production.

Processing and Storage

Keep the original package sealed and protected from moisture until use. Rotate inventory and use the oldest material first. Do not mix Technomelt PUR 3317 BR with other adhesives. Freshly bound products should be stored at or above 18°C (64°F), as colder storage conditions can significantly extend the chemical curing time.

Henkel recommends an adhesive-film thickness of 0.3–0.6 mm, with the upper end of that range used for book blocks thicker than approximately 10 mm. Actual roller or nozzle temperature may differ from the machine's displayed setting, so operators should verify the working temperature according to the binder manufacturer's instructions.

Cleaning PUR Binding Equipment

Reactive PUR adhesive requires the correct cleaning and shutdown procedure. Mid-State Litho carries Technomelt PUR Cleaner 2 and Technomelt PUR Cleaner All-In-1 for compatible cleaning and maintenance applications.

Use the cleaner specified by the binder manufacturer for the tank, applicator, hose, or shutdown procedure being performed. Partially cured adhesive must not be treated like ordinary EVA hot melt.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Technomelt PUR 3317 BR the same as Purmelt QR 3317 BR?

Yes. Technomelt PUR 3317 BR is the current Henkel product name. It was formerly sold as Purmelt QR 3317 BR, which is why the QR3317BR designation is still commonly used when ordering it.

Is QR3317BR the correct adhesive for the Horizon BQ-160 PUR?

Yes, this 1 kg pellet package is commonly supplied for the Standard Horizon BQ-160 PUR Perfect Binder. Confirm that your machine is the PUR configuration rather than an EVA-only version before ordering.

Can I use this adhesive in a standard EVA perfect binder?

No. Technomelt PUR 3317 BR is a moisture-reactive PUR adhesive and requires PUR-capable application equipment and the correct PUR cleaning procedure.

How long does Technomelt PUR 3317 BR take to cure?

Depending on humidity, paper moisture, adhesive thickness, material permeability, and storage temperature, the adhesive can reach approximately 50–80% of its final strength after 12–24 hours. Full cure generally takes 1–2 days.

How should an opened bag be stored?

Protect the adhesive from humidity and moisture and reseal the package immediately. Because PUR reacts with atmospheric moisture, opened material should be used promptly according to Henkel and equipment-manufacturer instructions.

Which cleaner should be used with this adhesive?

The correct cleaner depends on the machine and cleaning procedure. Mid-State Litho carries Technomelt PUR Cleaner 2 and PUR Cleaner All-In-1. Contact us with your binder model if you need help selecting the appropriate cleaner.
