Start from the finished job
What has to happen to the sheet after it prints decides the machine, so answer these first.
- The sheet needs a shaped or windowed cut, not a straight one. That is die cutting. Start at paper die cutting machines.
- The finished piece is a business card, tag, or multi-up sheet coming off a digital press. Start at business card cutters, where cut, crease, and perforate happen in one pass.
- The corners have to be rounded on a card, tag, or menu. Start at corner rounding machines.
- The job needs sequential numbering on tickets, forms, or NCR sets. Start at numbering machines.
- The job needs holes for binding, filing, or tabs. Start at paper drills.
- The sheet needs a tear line, a slit, or a score before folding. Start at perforating, slitting, and scoring.
- The stack has to be squared and de-aerated before it reaches a cutter or folder. Start at paper joggers.
If the job is a straight cut on a full lift, it belongs on guillotine paper cutters. If it is a fold, start at paper folders.
