- Horizon BQ-P65, a fully automatic tabletop binder with cover, tape, and pad modes, a hot-melt glue system, and integrated fume extraction for occupied workspaces. Book blocks run up to about 25 mm thick. This is the in-house manual, report, and short-run softcover machine.
- Standard Horizon BQ-160, a single-clamp entry production binder for shops that have outgrown a tabletop but are not yet at BQ-270V or BQ-280 volume. Confirm the adhesive configuration (EVA or PUR-capable) on the quote.
EVA vs PUR perfect binding
Perfect binding is glue binding: a milled spine, adhesive, and a wrap cover. The adhesive is what separates a softcover that survives shipping from one that sheds pages in a week. The two production chemistries are EVA and PUR. Hybrid machines (and hybrid glues) sit between them.
EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) is a thermoplastic hot-melt. It melts in the pot, is applied hot, and sets as it cools, usually in seconds. That speed is why EVA dominates everyday softcover work: manuals, reports, training books, trade paperbacks on uncoated stock, and short-run digital titles that need to ship the same day. EVA is lower cost per book, easier to clean, and friendlier when operators change jobs often. Limits: weaker bond on many coated and digitally printed stocks, less spine flexibility on thick books, and more risk of cold-crack or heat-softening in extreme storage temperatures.
PUR (polyurethane reactive) is a moisture-curing adhesive. It is applied hot, then cures by reacting with moisture in the air and the stock over hours (full strength often overnight). The result is a stronger, more flexible spine that lays flatter and holds coated, toner-heavy, and mixed stocks that defeat EVA. PUR is the usual call for premium catalogs, lay-flat manuals, photo books, and any job that has to survive warehouse heat, winter shipping, or repeated open-and-close abuse. Tradeoffs: higher adhesive cost, more careful handling and cleanup, and longer time to full cure before aggressive handling or shipping.
When EVA is enough. Uncoated or lightly coated stock, short or moderate page counts, fast turnaround, cost-sensitive runs, and shops that want simple pot maintenance.
When PUR is worth it. Heavy digital toner, glossy covers and text, thick books, lay-flat requirements, or books that must not fail in the field.
When hybrid makes sense. Your job mix is genuinely split (some EVA, some PUR) and you do not want two binders or constant glue-system changeover downtime. See hybrid perfect binders.

Choose the adhesive from the finished book
EVA is the familiar hot-melt path for many coated and uncoated book jobs. PUR is considered when difficult toner, coated stock, temperature exposure, or a stronger flexible bind changes the requirement. PUR also introduces cure time and cleanup that must fit the production schedule. A hybrid machine keeps both adhesive paths available when the job mix justifies them.
Test the book block, cover, grain direction, spine preparation, adhesive, and finished use. Do not choose adhesive from page count alone.
When should the job move from stitch to glue?
Compare the finished thickness, page count, cover, spine appearance, run length, and labor. Saddle stitching remains efficient for booklets that fit its thickness and format. Perfect binding creates a glued spine and can remove the manual insertion steps of coil binding on suitable short-run books.
Route the job to the right adhesive system
Compare EVA binders for conventional hot-melt work, PUR binders for difficult stocks and finished-use requirements, or hybrid binders when the shop needs both adhesive paths. Include glue supply, cure time, and trimming in the workflow plan.
