How to choose a commercial automatic folder

What sheet are you folding? Letter and legal stock at mailroom volume belongs on tabletop and letter folders. Larger sheets, heavier covers and multi-plate work belong here.
Does the setup change every job? If the shop runs short digital jobs with a different fold each time, buy stored setup and recall. If it runs the same fold for hours, a simpler pile-feed machine costs less and finishes the work.
Does the toner crack when the sheet folds? Then the machine you need creases first. Start at creaser folders or paper creasers, not here.
Does the sheet get stuffed into an envelope afterwards? That is envelope inserters, and some of those machines fold as part of the same pass.

Do automatic folders still need an operator to set the plates?
No. Programmable machines store the fold setup and recall it, so a repeat job does not depend on one senior operator measuring plates. Air feed or pile feed?
Air feed separates coated and digital stock without marking it, which matters on toner covers and gloss text. Pile feed runs long uncoated production where sheet cost is low and speed is the constraint. Shops running both usually buy air feed and accept the higher price.
