Details & specifications

The Akiles WireMac-EX21 is a heavy-duty electric wire binding machine for print shops and binderies that produce thicker twin-loop (Wire-O) books. It uses the 2:1 pitch hole pattern, fewer, wider-spaced holes, which is the standard for heavier books bound with larger-diameter wire. The electric punch handles up to 25 sheets per lift by foot pedal, and the 14-inch open throat steps legal and longer sheets through without a die change. Dies disengage for a clean punch on any sheet size, and a built-in wire closer finishes the book on the same machine. Mid-State Litho is an authorized Akiles dealer and stocks, installs, trains, and services the WireMac line across Michigan and the Great Lakes. Made in South Korea. Not a drop-ship: we deliver it, set it up, train your operators, and support it.

How to choose a wire binding machine

  • Pitch: 2:1 vs 3:1. This is the first decision. 2:1 (the EX21, this page) spaces holes wider for thicker books and larger wire. 3:1 (the EX31, EQ-253) is for thinner reports and presentations. Match the pitch to your wire stock and book thickness; they are not interchangeable. Need 3:1 for thinner documents? See the WireMac-EX31.
  • Punch drive: electric vs manual. The WireMac-EX21 punches electrically by foot pedal for steady mid-volume work.
  • Throat and die disengagement. A 14-inch open throat plus disengageable dies handles legal, ledger, and odd sizes cleanly.
  • Wire vs comb vs coil. Twin-loop wire is the most professional, permanent finish but cannot be re-opened to edit; use comb (CombMac-EX, EQ-252) for an editable book.

Frequently asked questions

What is 2:1 pitch and when do I want it?

2:1 spaces holes wider and is used for thicker books bound with larger-diameter twin-loop wire; 3:1 is for thinner documents. The WireMac-EX21 is the 2:1 model; the WireMac-EX31 is 3:1.

How many sheets does the WireMac-EX21 punch at once?

Up to 25 sheets per lift, with an electric foot-pedal punch.

Can it punch legal and odd sizes?

Yes, a 14-inch open throat plus disengageable dies give a clean punch on any sheet size.

Does it close the wire too, or only punch?

Both: an electric punch plus a built-in wire closer, so punch and close happen on one machine.

Does Mid-State Litho install and service it?

Yes, factory-trained install, training, and same- or next-day service across Michigan and the Great Lakes. It is not a drop-ship.
