Details & specifications

The Akiles WireMac-EX31 is a heavy-duty electric wire binding machine for print shops and binderies producing twin-loop (Wire-O) books. It uses the 3:1 pitch hole pattern, which means more, closer-spaced holes, the standard for smaller documents like reports and presentations up to about 1-1/4 inch thick. The electric punch handles up to 25 sheets per lift by foot pedal, freeing both hands, and the 14-inch open throat steps legal and longer sheets through without a die change. All pins disengage for a clean punch on any sheet size, and a built-in wire closer finishes the book on the same table. Mid-State Litho is an authorized Akiles dealer and stocks, installs, trains, and services the WireMac line across Michigan and the Great Lakes. Made in South Korea. Not a drop-ship: we deliver, set up, and support it.

How to choose a wire binding machine

  • Pitch: 3:1 vs 2:1. This is the first decision. 3:1 (the EX31, this page) suits documents up to about 1-1/4 inch, the most common office and report size. 2:1 (the EX21, EQ-1311) spaces holes wider for thicker books. Pick the pitch your wire supply and book thickness require; they are not interchangeable. Need 2:1 for thicker books? See the WireMac-EX21.
  • Punch drive: electric vs manual. The WireMac-EX31 punches electrically by foot pedal for steady mid-volume work.
  • Throat and die disengagement. A 14-inch open throat plus fully disengageable dies handles legal, ledger, and odd sizes without half-holes.
  • Wire vs comb vs coil. Twin-loop wire gives the most professional, permanent look but cannot be re-opened to edit. For an editable book use comb (CombMac-EX, EQ-252); for lay-flat presentations use coil.
