Details & specifications
The Formax FD 8650HS is an office-size, high-security shredder that destroys documents to a classified grade without a central, floor-standing machine. Mid-State Litho is an authorized Formax dealer, and we deliver, install, and service the 8650HS across Michigan and the Great Lakes for legal, finance, and government offices that need on-site destruction of sensitive material. Per Formax, the FD 8650HS is evaluated by the NSA and meets NSA/CSS specification 02-01 for Level 6 high-security cross-cut shredders, which corresponds to DIN 66399 grade P-7. It shreds up to 15 sheets at a pass at roughly 24 feet per minute to a 1/32 inch by 3/16 inch particle, and an automatic oiler periodically lubricates the cutting head so the machine holds its rated performance with less hands-on maintenance. The extra-wide feed opening takes documents up to 16 inches across, the waste bin holds up to 53 gallons, and an ECO mode drops the unit into standby after five minutes idle.
What P-7 (DIN 66399) and NSA Level 6 mean
Security grade is where this page has to be precise. DIN 66399 grade P-7 is the highest commercial destruction level: it reduces a sheet to particles of 5 square millimeters or smaller. That same grade is what the NSA/CSS Level 6 evaluation certifies for classified material, so P-7 (DIN 66399) and NSA Level 6 describe the same thing from two standards bodies. In practice, P-4 and P-5 machines are fine for ordinary confidential paper, while P-7 (the FD 8650HS) is the grade you specify when the documents are classified or top-secret. We list P-7 (DIN 66399) / NSA Level 6 consistently so the page matches both how buyers search and how policies are written. Compare the full high-security shredder range for other P-7 options.

Choosing a high-security shredder: the Formax P-7 ladder
The FD 8650HS sits in the upper-middle of Formax's P-7 high-security line. Use four axes to place it against its siblings: sheet throughput, bin capacity, footprint, and price. Click any model to see live pricing.
- FD 8300HS - compact deskside P-7 for a single workstation.
- FD 8400HS-1 - a step up in feed and bin capacity.
- FD 8500HS - the office unit one tier below the 8650HS.
- FD 8650HS - this model: 15-sheet feed, 53-gallon bin, automatic oiler, the upper-middle office tier.
- FD 8732HS - the floor-standing top of the line, including optical-media destruction.
If you need a smaller deskside footprint, step down to the 8300HS or 8400HS-1; if you destroy high daily volume or optical media, step up to the 8732HS. The 8650HS is the right pick for an office that wants industrial-strength P-7 destruction in an office-size cabinet.
Keep it running: the automatic oiler and the right oil
The FD 8650HS has an automatic oiler that periodically lubricates the cutting head, which is what keeps a P-7 micro-particle cutter at its rated throughput. Keep the correct consumable on hand: use shredder oil formulated for automatic oilers (sold as six one-quart bottles), not the manual pint oil meant for hand-oiling. You can order auto-oiler oil and related consumables from our supplies and consumables range.
Why buy from Mid-State Litho
Mid-State Litho is a second-generation family dealership that has sold and serviced office and production equipment since 1984. On an install-class machine like the 8650HS, the service and financing matter as much as the spec sheet: we cover Michigan and the Great Lakes with factory-trained technicians, and we deliver, install, train your team, and keep the machine running. Financing is available. See service and support and financing and leasing, or browse the full paper shredder lineup.
Frequently asked questions
Is the FD 8650HS NSA approved, and what is P-7? The 8650HS is evaluated by the NSA and meets NSA/CSS specification 02-01 for Level 6, which corresponds to DIN 66399 grade P-7, the highest commercial destruction grade (particles of 5 square millimeters or smaller).
How many sheets does it shred at once? Up to 15 sheets per pass at roughly 24 feet per minute, per the Formax specification above.
What is the automatic oiler, and what oil does it use? A built-in oiler that periodically lubricates the cutting head. Refill it with shredder oil made for automatic oilers (the six-bottle one-quart auto-oiler oil), not manual pint oil.
