Details & specifications
Mid-State Litho is an authorized Formax dealer serving Michigan and the Great Lakes region since 1984. The Formax FD 87HDS Series physically destroys hard drives and SSDs so discarded media cannot be recovered, giving you verifiable data security rather than the uncertainty of erasing or degaussing alone. Two models ship from our floor: the FD 87HDS Standard ($14,749) and the FD 87HDS-R Recycle ($19,799), which adds material separation for cleaner recycling streams. If you only need drives rendered unreadable quickly, the lower-cost Formax FD 87HD hard drive punch ($5,150) is the entry option; the FD 87HDS shreds to particles for the highest level of assurance. As a heavy floor unit it ships by freight, and our factory-trained technicians deliver, install, train your operators, and service it. Financing is available.
Load a hard drive into one of two cutting chambers and close the safety shield. Slide the chamber forward to drop the drive into the cutting head, then pull back to load the next one for continuous operation. Rugged solid-steel blades grind 3.5 inch HDDs to pieces 1.6 inches wide and smaller, and 2.5 inch HDD and SSD media to 0.19 inches and smaller. Shredded pieces fall into a molded plastic waste bin for disposal or recycling.
Each shredding chamber has a metal safety shield and its own resettable LED counter. The LED control panel shows operational status and offers jam protection with Auto Reverse and Auto Stop, and sensors stop the motor if a door is open or the bin is full. The metal-geared motor sits in an all-metal cabinet on casters for mobility and low operating noise.
FD 87HDS Standard vs. FD 87HDS-R Recycle
Both variants share this series page. The FD 87HDS Standard ($14,749) destroys HDD and SSD media into secure particles. The FD 87HDS-R Recycle ($19,799) adds an integrated separation feature for environments that need to divide destroyed media for downstream recycling. The destruction method is the same; the Recycle model is the choice when your facility processes its own waste streams.

Hard Drive Shredding vs. Degaussing
Degaussing erases a drive magnetically, but it cannot be visually verified and it is unreliable for solid-state media, which does not store data magnetically. Physical destruction is the certain method: once a drive is shredded into particles, the data is gone and you can prove it. For destroying printed documents rather than media, see our high-security paper shredders. To compare media-destruction options, browse the data destruction category.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the FD 87HDS destroy SSDs as well as hard drives?
Yes. It destroys both HDD and SSD media, grinding 2.5 inch drives to 0.19 inches and smaller.
What is the difference between the Standard and the -R Recycle?
The -R Recycle adds an integrated material-separation feature for facilities that recycle their own destroyed media. The destruction method is identical.
How does shredding compare to a hard drive punch?
A hard drive punch renders a drive unreadable quickly at lower cost. The FD 87HDS shreds to particles for the highest level of assurance.
Is the FD 87HDS a paper shredder?
No. It is built for media destruction. For documents, see our high-security paper shredders.
Do you deliver, install, and service it?
