Creasing and scoring both prepare a sheet to fold. They are not the same tool. Scoring stretches fibers with a rotary wheel. Creasing strikes a male/female die matrix so digital toner and heavy covers do not crack on the fold.
Digital printing made creasing a shop staple. Toner sits on the sheet instead of soaking in like offset ink. Fold without a real crease and the color layer splits — white fibers, a ruined cover. Paper creasers put a hinge in the sheet so the fold does not crack.
The two words get used interchangeably on the floor. They should not. Scoring uses a rotary wheel that applies acute pressure and stretches fibers along a fold line. Creasing uses an anvil and die to strike the sheet — a much more pronounced channel. Brands such as Graphic Whizard and Morgana build dedicated crease matrices for that strike.
On offset work, scoring was often enough. Ink soaks into the stock, so even if fibers break a little, the color still looks continuous. On digital work, you need the more aggressive approach. What is paper creasing?
Creasing is the modern way to prepare a sheet to fold. A die matrix with a male rule and a female channel compresses fibers into a hinge. The result is a consistent crease that almost never cracks. Standard crease width is around 1.2 mm; thicker stock may want about 2 mm. That channel is what a folder actually folds on.

What is paper scoring?
Scoring is the older method: a blunt rotary blade plows a shallow channel as the sheet passes. See the lineup under perforating, slitting, and scoring. On traditional ink-on-paper work it was usually enough. On toner sitting on the surface, it often is not.

Creasing die matrix
The core of every creaser is the die unit: an upper and lower die that come together and imprint the crease. Channel width in the matrix dictates crease width. Narrow machines usually ship with a standard die and offer optional narrow and wide dies for special jobs.

Choose creasing if
- The job is digitally printed — toner sits on the surface and cracks on a bare fold
- Coated stock over about 80 lb cover, or any piece where fiber cracking would ruin the look
- You need a true hinge: fibers compress without being cut
Choose scoring if
- Lightweight uncoated stock or offset work where a fold guide is enough
- The paper already folds cleanly and you are not fighting a toner layer
- You already run a multi-function perf / slit / score unit for tear-outs and light folds

How creasing machines work
A paper creaser uses a male rule and a female channel to compress fibers into a hinge. Unlike scoring, it does not cut the surface. Two main types show up in commercial finishing:
Rotary
Sheets feed through counter-rotating cylinders with creasing rules. High-volume work; often combined with perforating and slitting. Graphic Whizard CreaseMaster / FinishMaster-class units are the usual rotary example.
Platen / impact

Creasing
Compresses fibers into a fold hinge. Paper stays intact. Best for heavy stock and digital prints.
Scoring
Shallow indentation or channel. Fine on light uncoated. On heavy or coated sheets it can crack the surface.
Holes or slits for a tear line — reply cards, coupons, tickets. Many creasers also perforate.

What is the difference between creasing and scoring paper?
