Perfecta SDY TS three-knife book trimmer: workflow and format limits

Steve Barrett

The Perfecta SDY TS is an offline three-knife trimmer for books and other bound work. It belongs in the production discussion when untrimmed books are building up behind the binder. Compare its format limits and handling requirements with the books you produce, then measure trimming capacity against the output of the binding operation.

Plan trimming alongside binding

A new binder can expose a bottleneck at the next operation. Books come off the binding line, but they still need their edges trimmed to the finished size. If trimming cannot keep pace, the backlog moves from binding to trimming.

When reviewing perfect binding equipment, include the trimmer in the capacity calculation. Record the finished book sizes, block thicknesses and run lengths you handle. Also account for the time spent changing sizes between jobs. Those details make a useful basis for comparing book trimmers.

Three knives and one knife

A three-knife book trimmer has separate knives for the head, foot and fore-edge. A single-knife trimmer uses one blade to make the cuts in succession. The difference matters when comparing the cutting cycle and the handling needed for a finished book.

Trimmer type Cutting arrangement What to compare on the job
Three knife Separate knives trim the three open edges. Finished books per hour, loading and delivery, and format-change work.
Single knife One knife trims the edges through successive cuts. Total time to finish each book and the setup needed for the job mix.

Compare completed books using the required format and thickness, with loading, unloading and size changes included. A single-knife machine can be a candidate for a shop's first trimmer; a larger investment needs a production case based on the work it will handle.

SDY TS format limits

PERFECTA describes the SDY TS as an offline trimmer for small and medium-sized runs. Its current documentation lists a cast-iron frame, touchscreen control and servo-controlled positioning. The standard format limits below come from PERFECTA's SDY TS technical page.

Specification SDY TS
Maximum untrimmed format 345 x 520 mm
Maximum finished format 300 x 420 mm
Minimum finished format 70 x 80 mm
Maximum trimming height 100 mm

The manufacturer also lists optional equipment for smaller and larger formats, plus a stack magazine and waste conveyor. Check the installed equipment on the machine being evaluated. PERFECTA notes that achievable cutting performance depends on material, format and operator.

Compare current equipment for your book work

Mid-State Litho's current catalog lists the Perfecta BP SDY three-knife trimmer. Review that listing for its quoted configuration and pricing. When discussing an SDY TS or a BP SDY, give the exact model and installed options so the specifications match the machine under consideration.

For an existing trimmer, use our service and support page to describe the machine and the problem. To compare equipment, contact Mid-State Litho with the untrimmed and finished book dimensions, maximum block thickness, run lengths and required daily output.
