Single knife or three knife
The choice is set by what leaves the binder and how many books an hour have to leave the trimmer.
A single-knife trimmer cuts one edge per pass, so a book is handled three times. That is the right machine for short runs, mixed sizes and shops that change trim size several times a day. The Challenge CMT-130TC is the single-knife machine in our lineup.
A three-knife trimmer cuts head, foot and face in one cycle. It costs more and it earns the difference back on volume and on consistency across a long run. Standard Horizon HT-80, HT-110, HT-300 and HT-1000V, Challenge CMT 330 TC and Perfecta BP SDY are the three-knife machines here.
The Plockmatic Squarefold SFT is a different animal. It squares the spine and face-trims booklets in line with a bookletmaker rather than trimming perfect-bound blocks off line.
Four questions settle it. How many books an hour at peak? How often does trim size change during a shift? Does the trimmer sit in line with the binder or take stacks from a cart? Is the block perfect bound, thermally bound or saddle stitched, since a stitched booklet wants the SFT and not a three-knife?
What to check before you buy a book trimmer
- Trim size range, minimum and maximum, against the smallest and largest book you actually sell.
- Block thickness capacity, which is the limit people hit first on photo books and manuals.
- Clamp pressure and whether it is adjustable, because coated stock marks under a clamp set for uncoated.
- Knife life and who sharpens the knives. We sharpen in house. See knives for paper cutters.
- Changeover time between trim sizes, which decides whether short runs are profitable.
- Power. Two of the machines here run 208 to 230V three phase, which is a building question, not a machine question.
Trimming flat sheets is a different job. A guillotine paper cutter cuts stacks of loose sheets; a book trimmer cuts a bound block and holds the spine square while it does it.

What is the difference between a book trimmer and a guillotine cutter?
A guillotine cuts stacks of flat sheets. A book trimmer cuts a bound block on three edges and holds the spine square while it does it. Trimming bound books on a guillotine is where most spine damage comes from.
Do I need three knives?
Only if volume or trim-size consistency justifies it. A single-knife machine handles the book three times, which is fine at low volume and expensive at high volume.
Can a book trimmer handle saddle-stitched booklets?
A three-knife book trimmer is built for perfect-bound and thermally bound blocks. Saddle-stitched booklets are usually face-trimmed in line, which is what the Plockmatic Squarefold SFT does.
