Rosback perf, slit and score machines: tooling and model guide
Rosback perf, slit and score machines use rotary tooling to put tear lines, cuts and fold lines into printed sheets. The tool arrangement determines the finished pattern. This guide covers the TrueLine and 240XL families, the role of feeding and registration, and TrueScore Pro tooling for digitally printed stock.
Originally published June 29, 2022. Reviewed October 1, 2026 as a reference for Rosback equipment already in service. Rosback's current website is operated by Rosback Parts Store LLC and focuses on replacement parts, perforating and scoring components, and TrueScore Pro.
What perf, slit and score tooling does
Perforating creates a tear line. Slitting cuts the sheet along the tool path. Scoring prepares a line for folding. Different heads can be positioned on the machine's shafts for the required pattern. Applications include book covers, brochures, postcards, tickets and forms. For the difference between scoring and creasing, see our paper creasing vs scoring guide.
Rosback's TrueScore Pro and accessories brochure documents slot-cut, knife-cut and micro-perforating heads, plus slitting and scoring heads. It also lists Quick-Align heads, gutter slit/perforating heads, narrow-margin heads, pressure-sensitive slitters for label backing, and Easy Out shafts for tool changes. Confirm the head, shaft and machine combination before ordering.
Feeding and registration
Feeding and registration determine how the sheet reaches the tooling. Rosback's 240XL operating manual describes a vacuum feeder with separate vacuum and pressure supplies, followed by a registration table. It also describes a double-sheet detector. These are machine features to check during setup; they do not make registration or sheet handling independent of adjustment.
The current Rosback troubleshooting page links to a 220 and 240 series guide covering double feeding, side-guide alignment, feed-roll condition and delivery problems. It also provides separate maintenance schedules for the TrueLine and 240 series. Follow the manual for the exact machine and disconnect, lock and tag the power before service or maintenance.
TrueLine and 240XL model families
The models covered here are the 220SR, 223SR and 226SR TrueLine machines, plus the 240XL and 243XL. Sheet capacity and tooling layout vary by model. Use the model and serial number to obtain the matching manual instead of transferring one machine's specifications to another.
Rosback's 240XL Series Perforator Operating & Maintenance Manual, including the 243XL supplement, lists a maximum sheet size of 30" x 30" for both models. The 240XL section lists a cycle speed of up to 25,000 feet per hour. That is a linear speed rating, not a finished sheets-per-hour promise.
The manual identifies the 240XL as a single-shaft perforator and the 243XL as a tandem-shaft machine. The second shaft supports combinations of perforating, scoring and slitting for work such as CD inlays, J cards, tickets and forms. The manual also describes static, jogging and conveyor deliveries, and a 248 cross-perforator configuration. Check which delivery and tooling are installed on the machine you are evaluating.
Rosback's machine manuals page asks owners to include the machine's serial number when requesting a manual.
Cobra Strike perforating
The 240XL manual describes the optional Cobra Strike system for producing interrupted perforation patterns. Its heads can be set for different strike patterns, while the machine also performs regular perforating, slitting, scoring or micro-perforating. The required pattern and installed controls determine the setup.
TrueScore Pro for digitally printed stock
Rosback TrueScore Pro uses a male scoring disc above the sheet and a female groove below it. As the sheet passes between them, the male disc presses the paper into the groove to form the score. The system is intended to reduce cracking when digitally printed stock is folded.
The male discs are split so they can be changed without removing the head. Different disc and groove combinations suit different stocks. Rosback identifies kit 220-A-203 for Rosback machines and advises owners of folders and cover feeders to confirm the correct version. Match the kit to the shaft and application.
Use the stock you intend to run when checking the finished score and fold. Our guide to buckle folding explains what happens when the sheet reaches the fold plates and rollers.
