How to Clean a Perfect Binder Glue Pot: Step-By-Step Guide (2026)
Bindery how-to · Perfect binding
A dirty glue pot is the fastest way to weak binds, clogged rollers, and a service call you did not need. This is the shop process we use in Grand Blanc — drain, flush, purge — whether you run Horizon, Fastbind, Duplo, Bourg, or a tabletop EVA.
Step 1 — Drain the old hot-melt
- Heat the pot to normal operating temperature (usually 300–350 °F / 149–177 °C, depending on the adhesive).
- Put a sealed cardboard box, metal waste bucket, or foil tray underneath. Tape the box so it does not become a second mess.
- Remove the drain plug and let the old PUR or EVA glue flow out.
- Use a high-heat silicone spatula to push stubborn glue toward the drain.
- Scoop charred chunks with a silicone spoon before they harden again.
Step 2 — Flush and scrub (the magic step)
The fastest way to dissolve burnt-on residue is a hot flush. Two agents outperform the commercial cleaners we have tried:
- Paraffin wax (Gulf Wax from the grocery canning aisle)
- Refined coconut oil (odorless works best)
How we flush it
- Warm the empty pot to about 250 °F (121 °C).
- Add 1–2 lb of paraffin or coconut oil and let it melt completely.
- Scrub with a Scotch-Brite Dobie pad (soft yellow). It takes carbonized glue off without scratching Teflon or other non-stick coatings.
- Drain the dirty flush. Repeat once if the pot was really bad.
Field techs use this on Horizon, Perfecta, CP Bourg, and Wohlenberg machines. Same idea, any pot.
Step 3 — Purge before you switch glue types
Cross-contamination ruins a fresh barrel. After the second flush, this is required when going PUR to EVA or the other way — and when you move onto a hybrid like Planamelt Pro.
- Bring the tank to full operating temperature.
- Add about 1 lb of the new glue (EVA, PUR, or hybrid).
- Stir thoroughly, drain it completely, then load the fresh glue.
Tools that actually work
- High-heat silicone spatula (won’t melt at 400 °F)
- Scotch-Brite Dobie pads (pack of 12)
- Paraffin wax or refined coconut oil
- Metal waste bucket
How often
- Light / digital shops: every 2–3 barrels, or monthly
- High-volume trade bindery: every barrel change, or weekly
Thirty minutes now beats hours of downtime later.
