How a friction feeder works
A friction feeder pulls one piece at a time off the bottom of a stack. A driven belt or roller grips the bottom sheet and moves it forward. A fixed gate above the belt is set slightly thicker than one piece, so the next piece in the stack cannot pass with it. The gap setting, the belt grip, and the stack weight above the belt are what separate one piece from the next.
That mechanism decides where a friction feeder fits. It handles flat pieces well: single sheets, cards, folded pieces, envelopes, and tabbed or labeled work. It is set by gap, so a run that mixes thicknesses needs either a gate change or a different separation method.
Demand feeders release a piece when the downstream process calls for one. Continuous feeders run a steady overlapped stream onto a belt. The choice follows the line, not the feeder.

Friction feed, vacuum feed, or air feed
Three separation methods cover most feeding work, and they fail in different places.
Friction feed grips the bottom piece with a belt and holds the rest back with a gate. It is the general-purpose choice for flat sheets, cards, and folded pieces, and it is what every Streamfeeder model on this page uses.
Vacuum feed lifts the piece instead of gripping it. Use it when the stock is coated, static-prone, or too light for a gate to separate cleanly. We carry Plockmatic VFX and the Morgana VFL feeder for that work.
