Standard Horizon Print Finishing Equipment, Authorized Michigan Dealer
Mid-State Litho has been an independent dealer since 1984, supplying products like Standard Horizon equipment to commercial print shops, in-plant production environments, and book manufacturers across Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and the rest of the Great Lakes region with the deepest single-brand finishing catalog any regional dealer carries online. Standard Horizon (manufactured by Horizon International in Japan, distributed in North America by Standard Finishing Systems) is the production-tier benchmark for inline and automated finishing: saddle stitching, perfect binding, three-knife trimming, paper folding, collating, creasing, and slitting. Our Horizon catalog spans more than 20 production-grade models in active service across Great Lakes binderies, and we sell, install, train, finance, and service every line we list.
Our Horizon bookletmaker line includes the iCE StitchLiner Mark V, which saddle-stitches variable-data digital sheet output, is JDF-compatible, and runs at up to 6,000 booklets per hour, along with the SPF-2000 and FC-2000 bookletmaker pair and the Standard Horizon FoldLiner for inline scoring and fold integration. Our perfect-binder lineup covers the Standard Horizon BQ-280 entry production EVA binder, the BQ-300 single-clamp binder, the BQ-500 with iCE LiNK workflow integration in EVA or PUR, and the SB-09VF for case-binding and single-clamp short-run work. Three-knife trimming is handled by the HT-300 for offline workflows and the HT-1000V for inline integration with our SPF, FC, and BQ lines.
Our Horizon paper folder catalog includes the PF-40L, the PF-P3110, and the Standard Horizon PF-P3200 friction-feed folder, plus the FoldLiner inline station. Our Horizon collator catalog includes the QC-S30 tabletop, the VAC-L1000 air-suction collator, and the VAC-L600 air-suction collator. Our Horizon slitter, creaser, and supporting-workflow catalog includes the Standard Horizon SmartSlitter, the SmartStacker Digital B2 finishing stacker, the CRF-362 creaser and folder, the RD-N4055DMC die cutter, and the PC-P430 and PC-640 paper cutters.
If you are evaluating a complete Horizon finishing line, we configure end-to-end workflows from sheet output through finished booklet, perfect-bound book, or trimmed signature. Our factory-trained service technicians install, commission, and maintain every Horizon system we sell across Michigan and the surrounding Great Lakes region. We finance through Mitsubishi HC Capital America and LEAF Commercial Capital, and we accept trade-ins on legacy bindery equipment.
Standard Horizon Saddle Stitchers and Bookletmakers
Bookletmaking is where most print shops first meet the Standard Horizon name. MSL stocks the Horizon bookletmakers that take digital and offset sheet output to a finished, stitched, trimmed booklet.
The iCE StitchLiner Mark V is the flagship saddle stitcher. It is JDF-compatible and built for variable-data digital press output: sheets feed in, fold inline, saddle-stitch, and face-trim in a single pass, running at up to 6,000 booklets per hour depending on page count and trim configuration. The StitchLiner Mark V is the right machine for a shop that runs short-run, on-demand, variable-data booklet work and wants to eliminate the manual handoffs between folding, stitching, and trimming.
The SPF-2000 and FC-2000 bookletmaker pair is the mid-volume saddle-stitch system. The SPF-2000 folds and stitches; the FC-2000 trims the face. It is the common pairing for short-run, on-demand booklet production where a full inline StitchLiner line is more machine than the shop needs. The Standard Horizon FoldLiner adds an inline scoring and folding station upstream of stitching, so heavy and coated digital stocks crease cleanly before they reach the stitch head.
A Horizon HT-1000V three-knife trimmer completes a fully inline saddle-stitch line. The decision between a short-run digital path (1 to 200 sheets, on-demand, variable data) and an offset signature path (longer runs, pre-folded signatures) is the first question we work through with a booklet shop, and JDF integration is the differentiator that separates the StitchLiner workflow from older offline saddle-stitching setups.
Standard Horizon Perfect Binders: BQ-280, BQ-300, BQ-500, SB-09VF
Perfect binding is the second-largest Horizon product family in our catalog, and the model line buyers most often phone in by name. Browse the full range of perfect binders MSL carries.
The Standard Horizon BQ-280 is the entry production-tier EVA perfect binder in a single-clamp configuration, suited to short-run book production at up to roughly 525 books per hour and common in shops handling 50 to 500 page-count books in EVA. The Standard Horizon BQ-300 is the single-clamp binder positioned a step above the BQ-280, for shops that want more automation than the entry tier without moving to a full production binder.
The Standard Horizon BQ-500 with iCE LiNK is the production-tier binder. iCE LiNK workflow software gives it JDF integration with upstream digital presses and downstream HT-series three-knife trimmers, and it is available in EVA or PUR adhesive configurations with throughput up to roughly 800 books per hour. The Standard Horizon SB-09VF is a single-clamp binder for very short-run, case-bind-adjacent, and photo-book applications, with a lower price point, lower throughput, and lower setup time common to book-of-one production.
On adhesive: EVA is the entry path, easier to operate and maintain. PUR delivers stronger spine durability and lay-flat performance for premium photo books, catalogs, and reference titles, but it requires PUR-rated glue pots and moisture-controlled handling. Planamelt Pro perfect-binding adhesive is the hybrid hotmelt MSL stocks for shops that want PUR-adjacent durability without dedicated PUR equipment.
Standard Horizon Paper Folders: PF-P3110, PF-P3200, PF-40L, FoldLiner
Horizon paper folders cover the production folding tier, from general-purpose buckle folding to inline fold integration.
The Standard Horizon PF-P3110 is a production-tier friction-feed paper folder built for digitally printed coated and uncoated stocks. It runs buckle folds and accepts an optional knife-fold cassette for cross-fold work. The Standard Horizon PF-P3200 is the higher daily-volume friction-feed folder, with automated setup including job-memory recall, so a shop changing between jobs does not lose time to manual roller and stop-plate adjustment.
The Horizon PF-40L is a mid-volume buckle folder for general-purpose folding work. The Standard Horizon FoldLiner is the inline folding station integrated into StitchLiner and SPF saddle-stitch workflows; it removes a manual handoff between folding and stitching.
On feed type: friction feed handles light-to-medium-weight digital coated stocks where a suction head can slip, while air suction handles heavier offset stocks. Automated setup is the real differentiator over older buckle folders that required manual adjustment between every job. For desktop and floor-model folders below this production tier, MSL also carries Martin Yale and Baumfolder equipment on their own brand pages.
Horizon Three-Knife Book Trimmers and Creasers: HT and CRF Series
The Horizon HT line handles the three-knife trim pass that turns a bound book block into a clean finished piece, and the CRF series handles creasing ahead of folding. See the full range of book trimmers MSL stocks.
The Horizon HT-300 is the production-tier three-knife trimmer for offline workflows, designed for paired operation with the BQ-280, BQ-300, and BQ-500 perfect binders or with SPF and FC bookletmaker output. It trims the foot, head, and face of a book block in one pass. The Horizon HT-1000V is the production-tier three-knife trimmer with inline integration; it pairs with the iCE StitchLiner Mark V for fully inline saddle-stitch lines and with the BQ-500 for inline perfect-bind lines.
The Horizon CRF-362 is a creaser and folder that prevents toner crack on heavy digital stocks and is a common pre-folding station for digital print shops. For standalone scoring equipment, see our paper creasers.
A note on knife policy: we replace knives on the HT line on a scheduled service interval; we do not sharpen them. Re-sharpening compromises edge geometry on hard-tempered three-knife blades, and scheduled replacement is the production-environment standard.
Horizon Collators, Slitters, and Stackers: VAC, QC-S30, SmartSlitter, SmartStacker
Past binding and trimming, Horizon equipment handles the support workflow: collating, slitting, stacking, and die cutting.
The Horizon QC-S30 is a tabletop friction-feed collator for short-run sheet collation in office and small-shop environments. The Horizon VAC-L1000 is an air-suction collator for mid-volume work, handling coated and uncoated stocks where a friction head may slip, and the Horizon VAC-L600 is the higher-capacity air-suction collator.
The Standard Horizon SmartSlitter is a digital-print finishing slitter for business cards, postcards, and slit-and-crease cards, and it pairs with the SmartStacker Digital B2 finishing stacker for automatic cut-and-stack lines on B2-format digital sheet output. The Horizon RD-N4055DMC is a digital die cutter for short-run die-cut label, package, and short-run packaging work, pairing cleanly with digital-press output.
The Horizon CRF-362 creaser and folder also serves as a pre-station here, and the Horizon PC-P430 and PC-640 paper cutters are the single-station guillotine cutters for the Horizon shop floor.
How to Choose a Standard Horizon Finishing System
A Standard Horizon line is a multi-year capital decision. Four axes decide which models fit a shop.
Volume tier. Short-run digital work under 1,000 sheets per hour suits the SPF-2000 and FC-2000 bookletmaker pair, the BQ-280 perfect binder, the PF-40L folder, and the QC-S30 collator. Mid-volume production from 1,000 to 5,000 sheets per hour suits the BQ-300 and the BQ-500 with iCE LiNK, the PF-P3110 folder, and the VAC-L1000 collator. Production-tier work above 5,000 sheets per hour fits the iCE StitchLiner Mark V, BQ-500 PUR with HT-1000V inline lines, the PF-P3200 folder, and the VAC-L600 collator.
Workflow integration. Standalone shops with manual handoffs run offline-only models. Inline-capable shops connect the StitchLiner Mark V, FoldLiner, and HT-1000V into a single press-to-trimmed-booklet line. JDF-managed shops use iCE LiNK on the BQ-500 to share job tickets with upstream digital presses and downstream trimmers without manual setup.
Adhesive and binding type. Saddle stitch suits booklets up to roughly 100 pages on the StitchLiner and SPF and FC systems. EVA perfect binding suits short-to-medium runs of paperback books and catalogs on the BQ-280 and BQ-300. PUR perfect binding suits premium-durability books, photo books, and lay-flat catalogs on the BQ-500 PUR. Single-clamp short-run binding suits book-of-one and photo-book production on the SB-09VF.
Substrate. Digital coated stocks favor friction-feed folders and air-suction collators. Heavy offset stocks favor the VAC-L600 and the production-tier path. Mixed-stock shops use the iCE LiNK BQ-500 to recall job-specific setups across substrate changes.
