Start with the finished mail piece
Four questions decide most of this category.
Is the piece a folded self-mailer or a filled envelope? A self-mailer needs a tabber to hold it closed, so the path runs to tabbing machines. A filled envelope needs a folder-inserter, and that path runs to envelope inserters.
Is the piece a pressure-seal form? Pressure sealers fold and seal one sheet with no envelope at all, and they replace both machines above.
Does the address print in color or in black? Black address printing runs on monochrome inkjet printers. Full-color envelope printing runs on color inkjet envelope printers, and the price gap between the two is large enough to decide the rest of the line.
What is the daily volume and who runs it? Under a few thousand pieces a day, a tabletop tabber and a desktop address printer handle the work. Above that, feeders, conveyors, and dryers stop being options and start being the reason the line keeps running.
